What "Research Use Only" Means on a Peptide Label
What the RUO label on research peptides means, who these materials are sold to, why suppliers cannot give usage advice, and what a responsible RUO supplier looks like.
Every vial Atlas sells carries the words "For Research Use Only". The phrase shows up on reagents across the life-science industry, not just peptides, and it has a specific meaning. This page explains it in plain terms. It is general information, not legal advice.
What RUO means
Research Use Only (RUO) describes materials made and sold for laboratory research: in-vitro experiments, assay development, analytical reference work and similar uses. RUO products are not drugs, foods, cosmetics or dietary supplements. They have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for any use in people or animals, and they are not manufactured or labeled for that purpose.
Who RUO peptides are for
RUO peptides are sold to researchers and institutions for laboratory work. Responsible suppliers ask buyers to confirm their age and research purpose, and to agree not to use the materials in humans or animals or resell them to consumers. At Atlas, every order includes that certification at checkout.
Why suppliers cannot advise on use
An RUO supplier's role ends at the material: identity, purity, documentation, storage and delivery. Advice on how to use a compound in a person would present the product as something it is not. That is why reputable suppliers decline those questions and keep their product pages to chemistry and documentation. If a seller's marketing is built around personal use, that tells you how seriously it takes the label.
What a responsible RUO supplier looks like
- Clear "not for human or veterinary use" statements on the site, labels and invoices.
- Age and research-use confirmation before purchase.
- Lot-specific, independent COAs, because research depends on knowing exactly what is in the vial.
- Product descriptions about chemistry and documentation rather than effects in people.
- No sale of consumer-use accessories alongside the materials.
